autumn biad challenge: nov 7-10
by beautiful, only slightly mental (catcar)
at November 2nd, 2008 (04:28 pm)

Our sixth challenge is next weekend: November 7-10

Any day within this Friday through Monday period can be chosen for your reading day. Or, if you're feeling very ambitious, take more than one!

We'd love for everyone participating to start up a thread on the community either when you start or finish your book (or whenever during the course of reading it). Please include your LJ name, what book it is, how many pages it has, and which day you're starting it. You can tell us why you're choosing that one and then, under a cut, you can give your impressions of the book and how many pages you were able to read. You have the choice of waiting until you're done to write about it or start your commentary toward the beginning and then make a running log of your impressions. Just remember that your main goal is reading, not procrastinating on LJ, lol.

Participant icons will be posted soon.

Well, I decided that I would use today to finish up Pride & Prejudice.Collapse )

I have already started this version of The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov, and since I knew I'd finish Pride & Prejudice this weekend, I thought I would bring it home and continue to read as much of it as possible over the weekend. I forgot it at work though, so I'll have to bring it home on Monday and use it as my new bedtime story book. In it's place, I believe I'm going to start reading The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. I saw him first on Oprah, and was blown away by his honesty and appreciation for life without being a downer. He was just honest about all aspects of his disease and his life. Also, I had a long period of depression and other things, which I finally figured out how to deal with at about the age of 24 when I just "got it." I call this new manner of thinking (for me) "Angela's New Philosophy" (Angela being me.) His appearance on the show and the things he discussed were completely in tune with "Angela's New Philosophy", and I felt lucky that I didn't have to be diagnosed with terminal illness for me to realize all of this. I got the book for my birthday this year from a very close friend (catcar's sister, lomocita to be exact), and have been looking forward to reading it since then. So now's my chance.

I'm going to read for about an hour or so at a time, then take a break to eat, watch t.v., answer email, whatever. I may finish today. I may not. It's 206 pages. Click here to see if I finished!Collapse )

By the way, I have no idea why most of this entry is in italics. It looks fine in preview, but after it's posted, it turns wonky.

Name:souredpoison
Title: The Twilight Series: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and New Moon.
Page Number: I don't know, quite a lot. I'm reading Twilight and New Moon online.
Date Started: Friday through Sunday.
Why: Basically, I've been pressured into this. I wanted to know what all the fuss was about, so I borrowed the two middle books from a friend and have been reading them since Friday. I'm probably a third of teh way through Breaking Dawn now.

This is the first time I'm doing book-in-a-day :)
I'm souredpoison, I'm going to be reading The Beautiful Cigar Girl by Daniel Stashower. The book is 308 pages. I've been busy all morning, so I haven't had a chance to start it until just now, but unfortunately, I have to leave in about a half hour. I'm aiming to finish it by Sunday afternoon, however.

happy book & lover's day!

Every year on April 23rd, Barcelona erupts in a celebration of chivalry and romance, Book & Lover's Day. It all began in the Middle Ages with an annual Festival of Roses to honor St. George, Patron Saint of Catalonia, who as a brave Roman soldier allegedly slew a dragon about to devour a beautiful young princess. According to legend, a rosebush sprouted from the blood of the dragon and the soldier plucked its most perfect blossoms to give to the princess as a remembrance. In 1923, the Rose Festival merged with International Book Day, established to celebrate the lives of Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare, both of whom died on April 23rd in 1616. Now, bookstalls and flower stands sprout up along the Rambla, a two-mile stretch connecting the city with the Mediterranean Sea. Thousands of Barcelonans crowd the streets to enjoy a festive atmosphere of readings, music, literature, and dance.

a local, independent bookstore emailed me a 20%-off one book coupon good for today, so i'll swing by after work with my amazon wish list.

i hope all of you have some special time today with a good book and/or lover <3
